Alex is a data science professional with extensive experience in the education industry where he has occupied a number of different teaching positions with excellent feedback and awards. He is currently the Director of Madlytics, a Machine Learning & A.I consultancy that assists technology companies to become more data driven.
His teaching experience spans over 5 years at postgraduate and undergraduate levels in microeconomics at the University of New South Wales where he was awarded the business school tutor of the year award in 2016. He now teaches into the Masters of Data Science at UTS alongside Kailash in Machine Learning & Deep Learning. He also currently occupies a position as Data Science research fellow with the UNSW School of Economics, assisting to use data science to improve student outcomes.
Alex has a great passion for entrepreneurship and helping businesses grow through strategic use of data and sensemaking for decision making. He has extensive experience and involvement in the startup scene through community management & moderation of Australia’s largest online community, Sydney Startups as well as hosting and competing in (and winning!) hackathons and mentoring several startups.
Kailash Awati is an academic and consultant with broad experience in data and decision-making. Since 2016, he has designed and delivered highly-rated courses within the Master of Data Science and Innovation program at The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). In particular, he is the course coordinator and co-instructor for ‘Data, Algorithms & Meaning’ – the core Machine Learning course.
Over the last several years, Kailash has worked as a business intelligence manager, data analytics specialist, facilitator & sensemaker, project manager and engineering software developer in organisations ranging from startups to established firms. Earlier, in what seems to him like another life, he did research in fluid dynamics and other areas of physics and applied mathematics.
His current professional interests which include data and text analytics, decision making, sensemaking, knowledge management and collaborative approaches to problem solving in large organisations.
In addition to teaching at UTS and running a consultancy, Kailash is the co-author of the Heretic’s Guides series of books. The first one, Heretic’s Guide to Best Practices, won an Axiom Business Book Award in 2012 and was nominated for the Foreword Book of the Year Award in 2013.
